The Dog Park News June 14, 2012

DogParksUSA finished assessing the NOLA (New Orleans Louisiana) dog parks; they have three, one each in their Central Business District, French Quarter and Garden District/Uptown neighborhoods. The City Bark dog park in NOLA's City Park is by far the best dog park in NOLA and one of the best in the country (and they purchased the DogParksUSA dog park development book before developing City Bark!).

The WESTWARD HOund Dog 2012 assessments for this trip are complete, and DPU field reporter Shiloh took to Bourbon Street this evening (see photo). She earned a set of dog Mardi Gras beads at some point, has no idea what she bared to get them, but there they are!

DogParksUSA heads back to Florida tomorrow, driving for a few days, then will start updating PawedCastTV (http://www.PawedCast.TV) with assessment videos of all the dog parks visited.

Speaking of the dog park development book that NOLA City Bark purchased, it is still on sale for $15 off through June 16th - http://www.dogparksusa.org/pb/wp_3d059c69/wp_3d059c69.html - coupon code ONEFIVE

The Dog Park News June 13, 2012

Cajun Country is now hosting a visit for two days from DogParksUSA as part of its final phase of WESTWARD HOund Dog 2012's dog park assessments. DPU's field reporter, Shiloh, has already found out about several dog-friendly places and dog parks from the locals in the French Quarter, and found a big friendly dog statue in front of Harrah's Casino (photo) to hang out with.
Dog park assessments will begin tomorrow in the Big Easy.

DogParksUSA's publisher is offering another discount on the dog park development book, $15 off through June 16th - http://www.cafepress.com/dogparksusa.28337323 coupon code ONEFIVE

DogParksUSA's Australian readers might be interested in applying for funding to upgrade their dog parks; up to three (3) communities in Australia might be selected for $20,000 in upgrades. Nestlé Purina PetCare - the company behind some of the best known dog foods and products in Australia is getting behind communities that want to upgrade their local dog parks. Nestlé Purina PetCare recognises that the family pet plays many roles in the lives of families. Unconditional love, support in times of distress, keeping people active and encouraging older people to maintain their independence are just a few of these. Dog owners across Australia are being encouraged to start their own local community campaigns to improve their local dog parks. Improvements may take the form of dog education equipment such as tunnels and bridges, or landscaping to make the dog park a more attractive an inviting place to be. Nestlé Purina PetCare will award $20,000 to the council responsible for the dog park nominated by each of the 3 winners and will work with each council to ensure that the winning dog parks are supported by council, with proposals that are consistent with council directions for these sites and the local community. Taking cues from dog parks in the USA, off leash play areas are becoming increasingly popular in Australia. They provide alternative recreation opportunities for residents and allow dog activities to occur alongside other park activities. Importantly, they become another social hub where people come together via a common interest, their pets.
The $60,000 prize pool will be divided between three winning local dog parks. To put their dog park in the running to win, dog owners may enter online to pledge for their dog park each time they buy a PURINA dog product at a participating Woolworths supermarket. The Promotion closes on 14-August 2012. Communities wanting further information can contact: Purina Pet Care Advice Team Phone: 1800 738 238 or go to www.purina.com.au/dogpark for more information.

The Dog Park News June 12, 2012

Austin Texas dog parks were all assessed today by DogParksUSA's WESTWARD HOund Dog 2012. Many of the dog "parks" were not dog parks, as in "fenced areas exclusively for the use of dogs", but rather parks that permitted dogs. A lot of them allowed dogs off-leash but were in open areas, not fenced, right next to busy roadways and in the way of bicyclists and joggers (many of whom had to avoid lunging dogs and being chased by dogs). DogParksUSA only found two true dog parks, fenced and for the exclusive use of dogs. Those reviews for the true dog parks will appear in future PawedCasts. The locals did tell me Austin is very dog-friendly in that many eating establishments offer outside dog-friendly dining areas -- nice!

One of the dog-friendly (but not dog park) along the Colorado River in downtown Austin was quite lovely for a stroll, and the DPU field reporter stopped for a view of the downtown skyline with the river in the background (photo).

The Dog Park News June 11, 2012

DogParksUSA made it to Austin TX this evening after 10 hours of driving. Wish we'd gotten here earlier; Austin has lots of dog parks for us to assess, and we will need more time than we have to get them all in. Shiloh, the field reporter, is turning in early to get a very early start tomorrow. Stay tuned for the updates on Austin's dog parks tomorrow.

The Dog Park News June 10, 2012

Dog parks in El Paso TX did not pass muster during DogParksUSA's WESTWARD HOund Dog 2012 dog park assessments, sorry to say. Overall, they did not provide the dogs with any water (or with one spigot as far away from the dog park entrance as possible), no shade under the brutal desert sun, and only one waste station at the entrances, resulting in tons of poop far from the stations not getting scooped. Boo, El Paso!

Disgusted with the dog parks here, DogParksUSA's field reporter, Shiloh, chose instead to take an on-leash hike in Murchison Park and enjoyed one of the scenic overlooks (photo).

DogParksUSA is off to Austin TX tomorrow to continue its dog park assessments there.

The Dog Park News June 9, 2012

El Paso Texas dog parks are on the itinerary today and tomorrow for DogParksUSA's 2012 WESTWARD HOund Dog dog park assessments. Only two dog parks were assessed today -- sigh. Neither one provided sufficient water or shade for El Paso dogs where the summer temperatures average 91 degrees, or waste stations for their owners. But the dual doggie airlocks in one dog park were nice to see. Lack of waste stations (poop bag dispensers and trash barrels) result in poor poop pickup compliance by dog owners. And some dogs consider other dog's poop to be "Poop de Cologne", as you will see in this video ... https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=431025376930273

Let's hope tomorrow's collection of El Paso dog parks score better!

DogParksUSA finished off visiting a total of 12 dog parks today in Albuquerque NM as part of this phase of the WESTWARD HOund Dog 2012 dog park assessments. Found a few dog parks today that were actually decent, thank goodness! DPU field reporter Shiloh found a few friends (see video).

The Dog Park News June 7, 2012)

DogParksUSA's WESTWARD HOund Dog 2012 dog park assessments has arrived in Albuquerque NM today, and already visited four dog parks. Three of the four dog parks do not have water for the dogs, which is a real shame in this brutally hot desert climate. Also, the signage directing people to the dog parks only faces the cars as they exit the park, not as they enter it -- what's up with that? Many more Albuquerque dog parks still to visit, though -- maybe the rest will have better directions and be equipped with water.

Found another car wash with a dog wash in it; southwesterners seem love to wash their dogs in car washes! Check out the picture!

The Dog Park News June 6, 2012)

DogParksUSA's WESTWARD HOund Dog 2012 found all the dog-friendly places in Taos NMThe DPU field reporter surveyed the Rio Grande Gorge (picture). DPU met with the owners of 10,000 Wags to give them advice on establishing the first dog park in Taos. Anyone in Taos who is interested in supporting a dog park in Taos please contact Nick at 10,000 Wags.

The Earthship accommodations in Taos continues to amaze. Several future posts to http://trashywench.blogspot.com will detail this residence that truly feels like it is living as it collects water, creates energy and processes waste.

The Dog Park News June 5, 2012)

DogParksUSA made the 10 hour drive from Scottsdale AZ to Taos NM and arrived at the dog-friendly Earthship world headquarters. Yes, sounds outer spacey, but Earthships are wonderful adobe structures in the Taos desert using Earthship Biotecture techniques to create sustainable living. Built with natural and recycled materials (including beer cans, wine bottles and old tires), Earthships are heated and cooled, and powered by solar/thermal heating and cooling and solar and wind electric power. Water is harvested, sewage is treated and food is produced by Earthships, too. DogParksUSA will be in Taos for two nights; and will report on dog-friendly Taos in tomorrow's post, and more on the Earthships in the next issue of The Trashy Wench: Queen of Creative Reuse. http://www.DogParksUSA.org and http://trashywench.blogspot.com

The Dog Park News June 4, 2012)

This is DogParksUSA's last day in Scottsdale/Phoenix Arizona. Tomrrow, DPU spends the entire day driving to Taos New Mexico for the next phase of WESTWARD HOund Dog 2012

This part of Arizona has some dog-friendly business, in addition to dog parks. A lot of the dining establishments permit dogs in their outdoor dining areas, and some, like Duke's Sports Bar & Grill love dogs so much they advertise it boldly like this:

Sunday, June 3, 2012

The Dog Park News June 3, 2012)

Scottsdale and Phoenix Arizona have many dog parks, and DogParksUSA has one more day to finish assessing them. While at the PetsMart Dog Park in Phoenix today, a man called the police on DogParksUSA because DPU had the nerve to point out to him that he was ignoring that his dog had pooped and offered him a poop bag to pick it up with -- the Phoenix Police responded and thought the man was a nut -- DogParksUSA couldn't agree more! Scoop the poop, folks!

Taking a nice little break from non-scoopers-with-an-attitude, DogParksUSA went to Old Town Scottsdale - check out the short video clip.

The Dog Park News June 2, 2012)

WESTWARD HOund Dog 2012 dog park assessments started in the Scottsdale Arizona area this afternoon after DogParksUSA drove 360 miles from San Diego. Dog parks in Gilbert, Phoenix and Scottsdale were visited, with two more days of dog park assessments to follow.

DogParksUSA finally got to visit the infamous poo-powered lights dog park in Gilbert -- Cosmo Dog Park. This dog park has a dog poo digester that powers the street lights. A future PawedCast will go into more detail about the poo power. This dog park has so many charming aesthetic elements, too, besides poo power. Outside of the dog park, the water sports stadium has paw print elements added to the sides and the walkway to the stadium consists f giant prints (picture). Doggone cute!

The Dog Park News June 1, 2012)

DogParksUSA spent its last day in the San Diego area assessing more dog parks and finding a very dog-friendly shopping area -- the Seaport Village. Almost every store permits dogs except for the art galleries (whose fragile wares won't survive the madly wagging dog tail). DogParksUSA field reporter dog Shiloh found goodies in most shops and lots of butt scratches from store personnel everywhere. There is a paid parking lot, but if you buy anything from a Seaport shop, the store will validate your parking stub allowing you to park for two hours for just $1.00.  You might have enough time, like DogParksUSA did, to take your dog for a walk along the Embarcadero before leaving.
